Drug addiction in France was initially addressed from a repressive perspective, with the aim of eradicating drugs and achieving abstinence among users. Faced with the failure of these policies and the emergence of HIV in the 1980s, a paradigm shift gradually took hold, incorporating harm reduction approaches. Founded in 1984 by Jean-Marc Borello, SOS Drogue International is part of this shift, advocating for unconditional acceptance and dignity for individuals above all other care requirements. The association contributes to the development of innovative programs such as Sleep-In, the first emergency accommodation for drug users, and therapeutic communities, combining care, social support, and a residential setting. These practices in the field have had a lasting influence on French public policy in the field of addiction. This dynamic gave rise to Groupe SOS, which has become a major player in the social and medico-social sector, faithful to a humanistic, pragmatic, and person-centered approach.
