Based on data collected between 2010 and 2014 and on pluralistic currents of thought, this article seeks to understand changes in gender relations in post-Soviet Armenia and Azerbaijan. How do socioeconomic and political factors overlap in explanations of protests related to gender relations? A shifting equilibrium and the transformation of the established social order in these societies have provoked tension in gender relations and even in social relations more broadly. The concept of a “collapse of the masculine” or a “crisis of masculinity” in the post-Soviet era seems relevant in this field of research.
