French secondary school teachers’ view of ethnicity past and present. Critical discourses and limitations to the narrative on discrimination

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2020. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : ‪While teachers in France are increasingly aware of the existence of ethnic discrimination they rarely associate it with their own profession. Taking this observation as a starting point, this article demonstrates that ethnic tensions and discrimination experienced by secondary school pupils not only permeate from outside the school gate but are also largely due to contextual factors illustrated by mounting local segregation. As such, training and awareness programmes that isolate the issue from other aspects of school life and social realities may miss important opportunities for action and might even make teaching and administrative staff more oblivious to the matter and exacerbate their sense of helplessness.‪
