Jesus announced and inaugurated the kingdom of God. It was not what the Jews were expecting. What, then, is this kingdom? Where is it found today? What is our relationship, as Christians, to this kingdom? The kingdom is not an abstract reality. It relates to today’s context : a secularized world of injustice and violence. The kingdom of God in this context is primarily a community of equals under God, who forgive and share with each other. Jesus announces such a community and inaugurates it during his own lifetime. But the process of community building will continue. Jesus’ resurrection and the special gift of the spirit offer new assurance and give new strength. Lying on the horizon of human history and yet part of it, offered to us as a gift and yet confronting us as a challenge, Jesus’ vision of a new society stands before us as an unfinished task, summoning us to permanent revolution. Wherever men and women open themselves to the transcendent divine Mystery which impinges upon them, and go out of themselves in love and service of their fellow human beings, there the reign of God is at work. The Church remains the sacrament or symbol and the servant of the kingdom in this world. We can promote the kingdom by building Basic Christian and human communities.
