A number of mechanisms are contributing to the rise in tensions online: information overload, the transformation of debates into polarized confrontations, the influence of algorithms in radicalizing exchanges, and growing distrust of institutions. Logics of engagement, withdrawal, or self-censorship are restructuring forms of online participation, and conflictuality is becoming an ordinary mode of interaction.
