Upgrading creation and industrial property in Japanese cultural model: the case of Sumitomo Electric

Through a technometric analysis of the patents registered by Sumitomo in the area of superconductors, this empirical study reveals its mechanisms of valorisation of creation. Sumitomo’s business model concentrates on four axes: motivation, collaboration, result and acknowledgement. Legal arrangements such as naming the inventors and joint-ownership of patents are its main levers. Therefore, with a changing cultural and legal context, this advanced technology leader has perceived the need to attract and maintain high quality human ressources.JEL Classification: 032 et 034
