The purpose of this paper is twofold: First, it provides a brief overview of Boudon’s theory of the three markets of intellectual production and their audience. Boudon constructed this theory based on contemporary France. Second, it attempts to expand this model to other contexts, as well as to empirically test its validity and robustness through a longitudinal bibliometric study that examines almost sixty thousand documents.
