The analysis of trade relationships between businesses, or inter-organizational relationships, has spawned a sizeable body of literature in the last 30 years. The potential of proximity to improve the performance of the customer-supplier relationship has been widely examined, particularly the organizational aspects, but more recently along spatial lines. This paper looks at the particular context of public procurement by demonstrating, based on an econometric study of 565,557 transactions between 6,182 buyers and 26,570 suppliers, that supplier proximity has become a key element of governance of some inter-organizational relationships on public market in France.
