The well-known phrase “Specialists without spirit, sensualists without heart…”, in Weber’s The Protestant Ethic is borrowed from a text by Gustav Schmoller in which the latter emphasizes the moral problems brought about by technical development. Max Weber quotes it from memory while adjusting it to fit his own argument.
