In this paper, I study the diffusion of contemporary relational sociology in its three forms: network analysis, field theory, and actor-network theory. To make make these three approaches—and the methodological relationalism they demonstrate—more accessible, I draw on Daniel Defoe’s famous novel, Robinson Crusoe. As a conclusion, I argue that the difference between each of these relational approaches lies in different ways of conceiving collectives in sociology.
