Albert Hirschman’s writings are an internationally recognized reference. But his methodological approach, which underlies all of his writings, remains seldom analyzed. This text presents the main characteristics of this approach that Hirschman referred to as “possibilism.” He distances himself from causal approaches and defends a conception that has points of convergence with the interpretive social sciences.
