For several years now, specifically following the 2008 financial crisis, cooperative banks have attempted to strengthen their legitimacy with their members, who are key stakeholders in their governance. Through the textual analysis of Banques populaires (Popular Banks) websites, this study identifies the methods used by these banks to strengthen legitimacy in their discourse. This research contributes to strengthening the link between the legitimacy theory and the stakeholder theory, as well as to supplementing the work on cooperative bank governance.
