“Everyone’s got their paradox”

What happens when an organizational paradox is delegated to individuals? This question, essential in a context where individuals increasingly inherit a job that used to be accomplished at an organizational level, does not have a single answer. Indeed, our study concludes “against a determinism of paradoxes” since the type of paradox seems to determine neither the way it is received by individuals—here we identify a phenomenon of paradox diffraction, nor the way individuals manage it—with both inter- and intra-individual differences. By proposing to understand this variability as the result of both a disposition effect (role of individual characteristics) and a position effect (role of situations), we suggest different action levers to support their control.
