According to Freud, hysterical algia most often follow pain whose initial cause is organic. When pain takes on the form of suffering coming within the scope of a complex physical symptomotology, it can appear as a conversion formed through the compromise between libidinal satisfaction and prohibition. Through a case study, the author discusses the question of pain, isolated, confined, affecting narcissism, seen as a functional disorder containing the secondary potential of a conversion through symbolization.
