Being Assigned to Highly Performing Groups is not always Beneficial: Impact of the Class or School Attended on Academic Self-concept

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2017. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This paper is a summary of the so-called Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effect (BFLPE). According to this theory, being in a high-ability class or selective school could be detrimental for socio-emotional skills. More precisely, equally able students show lower academic self-concept in academic selective schools than in less selective schools. This effect, based on social comparisons with the reference group, i.e. the class or the school, is universal (observed in many countries) and robust (affects all students).
