Hysteria is a transference neurosis. Its defenses include repression and the displacement of the excitation towards the body. The symptoms are the expresssion of a conflict between desires and the prohibitions which condemn them. Conversions and diverse somatic complaints never correspond to an entity of somatic origins. Psychosomatic illnesses depict situations where psychical silence is associated with somatic states described by the medical field. The defenses are characterized by splitting and depression. Destructiveness is at work.
