Myth and History in Late Ancient Africa: About a Text by Ibn Khaldûn

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2001. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Since the beginning of the eighties, a series of papers and books has renewed a very old model of interpretation about the problems of Roman Africa during the Late Antiquity: the westward migrations, between the fourth and the seventh century AD, of a group of new Berber tribes coming from the Egyptian borders. A main argument of this theory is based on a corpus of Arabic texts. These documents effectively deal with a Berber migration. But the paper shows that their context, their mythical nature, and their Greek, Latin and Jewish sources have been totally neglected by the modern historiography. In fact, these texts only relate the myth of the eastern origin of the Berber people, in a Biblical time, and with just a new ethnic vocabulary intended to update the story.
