In contrast with Rigord’s definition of his profession as a physician and historiographer of the king of France at the same time, his chronicle doesn’t reflect any distinctive interest in medical or pathological realities: is this lack of attention due to his own mediocrity or, more basically, to the genre of historical writings during the Middle Ages? A detailed study of the narrative and of its successive dedications leads one to call the legitimacy of his qualifications to question. The deadly criticism or ironical denigration formulated by his contemporaries against Rigord are quite revealing of the historiographical issues of the time.
