A Lesson in Soft Power: The Role of US Cooperation with China in the Export of Management Education

This article analyzes the role of the United States’ cooperation in the rise and structuring of management education in China since the early 20th century. Successive cooperation programs led by several US stakeholders (evangelization, Communism containment, and economic development aid) have brought assistance in order to support Chinese development. With different goals and perspectives, they have all used management education as a lever for each of their projects. Despite decades of Maoist Communism, this process has led to exporting a US model of management education which now prevails in the People’s Republic of China.
