Community consultation and land dispossession. The geography of power in northern Mozambique

Several states have reinforced consultation mechanisms to regulate land deals linked to agricultural investment and to limit dispossession. Based on observations and interviews on investment sites in Mozambique, this article analyzes how structural violence and trickery shape inhabitants’ consent. Community consultations are marked by striking power and knowledge asymmetries which enable the rearrangement of humans and lands at the expense of inhabitants and to the advantage of investors. This article thus contributes to the geography of power, highlighting the spatialities which power shapes and relies on. It locates land dispossession in long-term history and geography.
