Sustainable urbanism is based on a plurality of knowledge from different actors: politicians, users, associations. Yet the explanation and exchange of knowledge often seem overlooked in favor of models that imagine an ideal urban form (Frey 1999). This interdisciplinary article emphasizes the importance of basing sustainable urban development on a knowledge management system that can facilitate interactions (Ermine 2007) and collective action (Ferrary and Pesqueux 2006). Game theory (Benabou and Tirole 2006) and global identity dynamics (Sardas 2008), explored here in an experimental study, highlight different obstacles that may hinder such knowledge management, but they also reveal that the positive role of usability is often much more effective than regulatory pressure.
