Opening up Piedmont-Savoy: The maritime aspirations of a mountain state

For nearly a millennium, the House of Savoy reigned over an alpine state opening onto the sea, from the acquisition of Nice in 1388 to the acquisition of Liguria in 1815. Indeed, the sea played an important role in the rise of this dynasty with Mediterranean ambitions, something that historians rarely mention, or even ignore. Thus, it seemed foreign to its destiny, even though the House of Savoy was at the helm of a maritime power in the early nineteenth century. This article reconsiders the peripheral position of the sea in Mediterranean in the territorial construction of a composite monarchy directed by an Alpine dynasty which, in reality, was also Mediterranean.
