In December 2022, the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted a new strategic plan for the next decade: the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Action- and results-oriented, the new GBF seeks to learn from the shortcomings of the previous strategic plan, the Aichi Targets. The new GBF includes twenty-three targets which aim to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, with the goal of promoting environmental recovery. Following a rights-based approach and aiming to be rapidly integrated into international environmental governance, the Global Biodiversity Framework relies on new monitoring and implementation mechanisms being put in place to support the realization of the established targets.
