In the Mediterranean, urban agriculture varies in momentum, between decline and growth. The case of Beirut showcases the adaptation of urban agriculture according to land tenure. This article focuses on waqf land (or habous land) an inalienable private good, the revenue of which benefits the community in the form of pious actions. We identify three main forms of urban agriculture in Beirut: relic agriculture, farming where waqf land allows multiple uses, and urban breeding. Our results show that waqf land provides greater security for farmers, whereas other private lands used for agriculture are characterized by great land tenure insecurity.
