RésuméEn 1932, l’écrivain allemand Hans Fallada publie le roman Quoi de neuf, petit homme ? (Kleiner Mann, was nun ?) : le livre, qui décrit la prolétarisation d’un couple d’employés affectés par le chômage de la crise économique des années 1930, devient un bestseller en Allemagne et à l’étranger dès l’année de sa publication. L’article se propose dans un premier temps de revenir sur les facteurs expliquant ce succès, en montrant ses liens avec la sociologie naissante des employés et les œuvres littéraires et artistiques érigeant ce groupe comme emblème de la modernité sociale et culturelle de l’entre-deux-guerres. Dans un second temps, l’article montrera qu’en dépit d’une historiographie riche sur les employés depuis 1945, le roman intéresse l’historien actuel en ce qu’il invite à l’exploration de champs encore peu connus de recherche tels que la culture quotidienne, la sphère familiale et la langue de ce groupe social.

The Employees of Weimar Germany: The Historian and Hans Fallada’s Bestseller, Little Man, What Now ? (1932)In 1932, the German writer Hans Fallada published Little Man, What Now? (Kleiner Mann, was nun?) in which he described the proletarianization of a couple of employees hit by the 1930s’ economic crisis. It became a bestseller in Germany and abroad the year it came out. The article first analyzes some of the underlying factors accounting for its success, showing its connection with the nascent sociology of employees and with the literary and artistic works that made this category an emblem of social and cultural modernity of the interwar period. The article goes on to show that in spite of a rich historiography concerning employees since 1945, the novel interests the present-day historian for the exploration of previously neglected fields of research such as the family and the language of this group.
