From where did the first living cell originate? The history of science portrays the persistence of such a quest about the origins of life. The development of biology, biochemistry, and even astronomy has made it possible to raise a few hypotheses. The origins of life cannot today be explained in terms of the origin of a substance responsible for all vital processes, not even in terms of the origin of a molecule, be it a gene or an enzyme, however complex they may be. The more the present living cell reveals its complexity, the more the mystery of the origins of life thickens and becomes more and more difficult to study.
