Unlike other xiith century cistercian authors, Guillaume de Saint-Thierry does not limit himself to a treatise on the soul but writes on the Nature of the body and of the soul, even though he maintains a criticial discourse on the body. The article explores Guillaume’s notion of « Man in his entirety » through an examination of the place of the body in relation to the essence of man and an interiority-exteriority dynamic. The analyses he offers show the superposition of two structures, quadripartite and tripartite, in the body and soul that recall the two exteriorities of which man is an image : the Cosmos and God. Guillaume’s text formulates two types of discourse at the cost of sacrificing the relational dimension of the body.
