Quickly forgotten in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, the contribution of Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange (1877-1964) to the inter-war debate on asceticism and mysticism was nevertheless essential, and Perfection chrétienne et contemplation, his great publication of 1923, which brings together articles previously published in La Vie spirituelle, undoubtedly deserves to be considered a classic of twentieth-century French theology. The book’s publication takes place at a crucial polemical crossroads and preserves important traces of the theoretical dialogue between Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange and the philosopher Jacques Maritain. After four years of fierce polemics, from the publication of the first issue of La Vie spirituelle to the publication of Perfection chrétienne et contemplation, Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange succeeded in establishing on the theological scene an easily identifiable school of Dominican spirituality.
