The Symbolism of Liquids

The article presents the edition of a sermon on St. Paul’s rapture to the third heaven. The sermon is probably the work of a Franciscan and certainly dates to the last quarter of the 13th century. The accompanying study proposes an analysis of the sermon’s sources as well as its notable employment of a complex symbolic apparatus, which makes particular use of “liquid” or “fluid” symbols: water, tears, dew, wine, etc. Also proposed is an interpretation of the text’s sketch of the “psychology of rapture”.
