From the universal to the singular: Taking care of processes (plural) of aging

The form of care practiced in the context of the homes of the elderly, the frailties of older people, but also their habits, their privacy, and their history, lead us to examine the designer’s room for maneuver and modes of action. In this perspective, we question the notion of universal design, which is overrepresented when it comes to considering health and medical design, and we reflect on the development of a design of singularities. Special attention should therefore be paid to the notion of “home” through work on adaptability and appropriateness, as reflected in the stages of transition within “aging life,” but we also consider the inhabitant, the one who makes the place. How can the designer incorporate this thinking into the process of “taking care” and how does he/she become a support?
