“Since a painting entertains a relationship with desire, the place of a central screen is always marked” (Lacan). The object of this desire is not so much the object of the representation as of the gaze itself. The correlation between desire, gaze and the function of the screen is exemplified by an engraving by Rembrandt “The painter and his model” on exhibition in the Museum of Tourcoing.
