The French Communist Party opened its head office’s archives in 1994, putting at the disposal of research a unique heritage with regards to French political parties. In parallel with the treatment of these documents, an important collection of illustrated posters, published by the FCP from 1945 on, is being constituted. As a privileged medium of the Party’s propaganda, they bring an original complement to the study of the history of the French communist movement, of its propaganda, of its “militant culture”, etc. Thus, since the end of 1998, saving, photographing and creating a computerised analytical inventory have been carried out at once. The first phase of the inventory, covering the period from 1945 to the 1960’s is almost finished. The treatment of the posters published during the 1970’s-1990’s is on the go. This long term venture leads to a data base allowing multiple levels of research, detailed inventory files (including technical and documentary information) and digitalised reproduction of posters.
