In this article, the author states his strong belief in the importance of the family’s role at each step of the treatment of mental disorders, in children or adults: it can help diagnosis, which is improved by the knowledge of the social and family environment, and the intake, as the family can help the therapist through its understanding of the psychological disturbance and through its supportive attitude. The author remains firmly attached to the traditional family setting: the family first, then the grandparents, employed as consultants. The author also investigates the role of other settings, such as individual systemic therapy.
