While psychoanalysis as written by Freud was originally regarded as sacred scripture by his followers, over time perspectives broadened and theory and practice evolved, as did psychoanalytic teaching and organizations. The influence of European analysts who arrived in the United States in the 1930s was particularly important. This article presents a brief overview of the theoretical and clinical changes in American psychoanalysis since its inception.
