Vinyl, Reggae and Sound System Parties. A Media Ecology

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2017. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This text deals, in a French context, with the reggae roots 12 inch single and sound system sessions. In this perspective, we follow the career of an actor of this musical current, whose passion for reggae roots vinyl flourishes in a collective assemblage that grounds it. We then focus on the media ecology of the reggae roots vinyl, first by addressing the issue of analog sound in a digital world. Then, we show that during sound systems sessions the sound system works as an interpreter more than a sound diffuser of vinyl discs. Finally, by examining the reception of reggae in the sound system sessions, we address the issue of the power of low frequencies which gives rise to a phenomenon of sound transduction encompassing the technical and human components of this local ecology. Taking the decision to focus on a specific medium and to consider its concrete mode of operation in a particular context, this leads us to examine a mode of existence rather than a simple object.
