The États Généraux du Travail Social (General Assembly of Social Work), announced for 2014 as part of the “Long-term plan for the fight against poverty and in favour of social inclusion,” presents us with an opportunity to work both for the present and the future. Its aim is to give new foundations to social work. This demands that we think about the history of social work—not in order to reproduce a story about important past events or personalities, but to deal with questions of our own knowledge of our past, and potential areas for research.
