From an approach by education to an approach by accompaniment: What are the issues for social work?

The history of education goes back a long way, even to the origin of man. From the ideas of normalization, of transmission from generation to generation and of individuation, it has become a field for thought, debate, study, science, and research. Today, the term “accompaniment” (accompagnement) tends perhaps to supplant that of “education.” Not used in the 1960s and 70s, this term is now popular. We can see that practices of “accompaniment” are related to changes in society that took place in the 1970s in many spheres of life. But does “accompaniment” constitute a homogeneous group of practices in a time of social transition? What are its functions? What is at stake and at risk? And why has education been left aside?
