Two dimensions of Mathilde du Ranquet’s work are discussed in this article, in order to show how they cohere. Her long career brought her frequently to France and Canada. In her quest for method and the evaluation of results, she gradually learned lessons from Canadian practices, structuring them into a coherent approach that brought the professional relationship and the teaching relationship together under the title of “supervision.” This research also gave her a perspective on the relationship established by management. It took a long time to adapt these ideas to French realities. Du Ranquet progressively developed her thinking about training practices and particularly about those of social work supervisors and managers.
