Until the eighties, rural studies were helpful in understanding the changes in French society because the action of rural elites was in tune with the changes in France. After describing the golden age of rural studies, Pierre Muller questions the capacity of the agricultural profession to integrate a new vision of French society and express global changes affecting it.
