RésuméDepuis son indépendance, le Kazakhstan a changé des noms de villes, simplifié la division administrative héritée, et s’est choisi une nouvelle capitale, Astana. Des informations assez précises sont devenues disponibles sur les implantations stratégiques, notamment de Stepnogorsk et des environs de Sémeï, sur les exploitations d’uranium et sur les plus graves atteintes écologiques. Le pays compte sur l’appui de firmes étrangères pour nettoyer et remettre en exploitation ses richesses minières et touristiques ; mais l’État y a repris fermement en mains les principaux secteurs depuis 1996, et la privatisation reste partielle.

Abstract Attractive and repellent sites in Kazakhstan.— Since becoming independent, Kazakhstan has changed the names of towns, simplified the administrative divisions it inherited and chosen a new capital, Astana. Precise information is now available on strategic sites — particularly Stepnogorsk and the environs of Semei — on uranium mines and on the most serious ecological problems. The country is counting on the support of foreign firms to clean up and revitalise its mineral and tourist wealth. However, the State has firmly regained control of the main economic sectors since 1996 and privatisation is still only partial.
