‪Cette contribution traite des schémas de périodisation en germanistique et de tableaux apparentés opérant comme visualisations et supports d’affirmations scientifiques, en particulier à la lumière des appels récents à développer des périodisations qui n’ont pas encore été représentées sous forme graphique ou qui constituent des défis aux schémas existants. Leur persistance en tant qu’outils de communication dissimule les aspects problématiques de leur potentiel explicatif, une situation à laquelle doit faire face tout modèle de substitution envisagé. Alors qu’une solution prenant en compte la complexité des critères de périodisation reste difficile à saisir, il convient de dévoiler et d’expliciter les postulats qui sont à la base des schémas actuels.‪

‪This article treats Germanistik periodization diagrams and related tabular forms as visualizations and bearers of scientific claims, particularly in the face of recent calls for developing periodizations and their criteria, which either have not yet been graphically depicted or present challenges to the extant diagrams. Although their persistence as a medium of communication belies problematic dimensions of their explanatory potential, a situation which must be addressed by any potential replacement model. While a solution that respects the complexity of periodization criteria remains elusive, the claims that undergird current diagrams must be revealed and explained.‪

In diesem Beitrag werden germanistische Periodisierungsschemata und verwandte Tabellen als Visualisierungen und Träger wissenschaftlicher Behauptungen behandelt, besonders angesichts neuerer Aufforderungen, Periodisierungen zu entwickeln, die entweder noch nicht graphisch abgebildet worden sind oder Herausforderungen der schon existierenden Schemata darstellen. Ihr Fortbestehen als Kommunikationsmittel täuscht über problematische Aspekte ihres Erklärungspotenzials hinweg, eine Situation, der sich jedes mögliche Ersatzmodell stellen muss. Während eine Lösung, die die Komplexität der Periodisierungskriterien berücksichtigt, schwer fassbar bleibt, müssen die Behauptungen, die den aktuellen Schemata zugrunde liegen, enthüllt und erläutert werden.
