Résumé L’historien ruraliste a beaucoup à apprendre d’un corpus en cours de recollection : celui des statuts communaux de l’actuel département de Vaucluse. À travers l’exemple d’une petite communauté du bas Rhône, Gigondas, on étudie au ras du sol le processus d’élaboration de la loi locale et la part respective qu’y prennent le seigneur et la communauté. Une fois rédigés et consentis par tous, les statuts jettent sur le terrain un filet normatif à mailles si serrées qu’il oblige, entre autres questions, à mettre en examen la notion d’individualisme agraire que l’on dit inhérent aux paysanneries méridionales.

Rural historians can learn much from a corpus in the process of being compiled, that of the communal statutes of the present département of Vaucluse. The case of a small community on the lower Rhône, Gigondas, provides an opportunity to study at the grassroots level the process whereby local legal custom was elaborated, and the respective shares of lord and community in this elaboration. Once written down and agreed upon by all concerned, these statutes covered the area with such a dense network of normative rules that they put into question, among other things, the common conception of agrarian individualism said to be an inherent trait of Southern peasantry.
