RésuméAujourd’hui, l’étude de l’électrification rurale ne contribue que modestement à l’histoire de l’électricité en général. On s’efforcera ici de pallier cette carence historiographique à propos des campagnes françaises. Comment, dans le monde rural, la « fée mystérieuse » s’est-elle transformée en « fée électricité » ? Rares sont ceux qui ont conservé le souvenir de ce vaste programme d’électrification rurale, de ses modalités et de ses acteurs. Mais ce sujet, qui a tant passionné nos aïeux dans l’Entre-deux-guerres, est redevenu d’actualité, à la suite des deux tornades qu’a subies notre pays le 25 et le 27 décembre 1999, puisque les réseaux électriques ruraux et leurs abonnés ont été alors très touchés.

Today, the history of the rural electrification contributes only modestly to the history of the electricity in general. The objective of this article is to try to mitigate this historiographic shortcoming by presenting the development of electricity in the French countryside. How, in the rural world, was the « mysterious fairy » transformed into an « electric fairy »? The memory of this vast program of rural electrification is little remembered today. But this topic which fascinated our forefathers so much in the inter-war period became again of interest, following the two tornadoes which struck France on December 25 and 27, 1999, since the rural electricity networks and their subscribers were the most affected by this disaster.
