Nous proposons ici un entretien avec l’anthropologue David Le Breton sur son dernier ouvrage Des visages, une anthropologie (2022) pour approfondir l’ambivalence du visage, qui représente l’énigme de notre rapport à l’altérité, son côté sacré, le respect et la vénération d’autrui et, aux antipodes, sa profanation, le rejet de l’autre, la stigmatisation, le racisme. Dans cette rencontre avec le visage de l’autre se joue l’essentiel de notre humanité. C’est là que commence le dialogue avec l’Autre, notre responsabilité envers autrui, et que se construisent les significations sociales. Le visage est le lieu à la fois de l’individualisation extrême et de la socialisation. Il est identité et altérité. Avec David Le Breton nous analyserons l’histoire du visage dans les sociétés occidentales, les privilèges et les stigmates qui lui sont associés ainsi que les dangers des procédures de reconnaissance faciale.

‪We propose here an interview with the anthropologist David Le Breton on his latest book Des visages, une anthropologie (2022) to deepen into the ambivalence of the face, which represents the enigma of our relationship to otherness, its sacred side, the respect and veneration of others and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, its desecration, the rejection of the other, stigmatisation and racism. In this encounter with the face of the other, the essence of my humanity is at stake. It is here that the dialogue with the Other begins, my responsibility towards others, and where social meanings are constructed. The face is the place of both extreme individualisation and socialisation. It is identity and alterity. With David Le Breton we will analyse the history of the face in Western societies, the privileges and stigmas associated with it and the dangers of facial recognition procedures.‪
