Si l’agriculture transgénique est peu développée dans l’Union européenne, celle-ci souhaite promouvoir la coexistence entre cultures OGM et conventionnelles. L’Europe communautaire s’appuie sur deux principes. Elle entend préserver la liberté de choix de l’agriculteur et du consommateur tout en prenant en compte les éventuels risques environnementaux et sanitaires liés aux OGM. Comment l’Union européenne aborde-t-elle cette coexistence et quels sont les aménagements spatiaux envisagés. En quoi cela interpelle-t-il le géographe et quel peut-être son apport sur ce sujet ?

GMOs : from genetic to geographical modifications ? Although GMOs do not have a strong presence in western European agriculture, the European Union is aiming to promote the coexistence of such GMOs and conventional crops. This policy is based on two principles. It strives to maintain freedom of choice for farmers or consumers while considering environmental and health risks. How is this European policy tending to promote this coexistence and what are the associated spatial scenarios ? What are the geographical implications of such coexistence and the possible contribution of the geographer tothisdebate ?
