Depuis Colenbrander, bien des historiens ont transformé les révolutionnaires néerlandais en marionnettes du gouvernement français. Les nouveaux documents publiés, entre autres par L. de Gou, démontrent que la République batave a bel et bien réalisé une constitution à son goût. Le projet de Daunou ne sut s'imposer et détrôner ceux qu'avaient réalisé les Bataves. Une comparaison- sur quelques points précis permet de déceler l'originalité de l'acte constitutionnel de 1798.

The Dutch-ness of the Constitution of 1798.Since Colenbrander, many historians have transformed the Dutch revolutionaries into puppets of the French Government. New documents published inter alios by L. de Gou show that the Batavian Republic in fact managed to forge a constitution of its own choice. The Daunou draft made little headway and failed to upstage versions drafted by the Batavians. A comparison of various specific items helps highlight the originality of the Constitutional Act of 1798.
