Macpherson's works offer constants - criticisms of « possessive market societies », with their corresponding democratic systems and anthropological conceptions - but also new emphasis: modernity is not only negative but also self-contradictory. Thus, C.B. Macpherson is not only an unprejudiced radical capable of acknowledging the merits of marxist criticism but also a liberal critic of liberalism.
