C. Colliot-Thélène's main contention is that, beyond differences, the deep relationship between Marx and Weber proves them to be the theoreticians of effectivity and of society. They are concerned with the real powers at work in history. Their being read by a philosopher, Habermas, who pretends to build a theory of society through communicative reason, results in a forced and illegitimate interpretation. He puts forward, as a reconstruction of historical materialism, a theory of evolution in which cultural factors are the decisive factors of change.
