Si la Révolution s’inscrit assurément par de nombreux aspects dans la continuité de la politique des transports engagée par la monarchie au cours du XVIIIe siècle, la période est marquée par un ralentisse­ment notable des constructions et par la détérioration des infrastruc­tures existantes. Les autorités révolutionnaires ont cependant entrepris de promouvoir le projet d’un espace homogène de circulation qui serait sous-tendu par un réseau de communications, étalonné par la seule distance et entretenu grâce à la péréquation des recettes péagères, dans le but de contribuer à l’unité du territoire.

If the Revolution saw in many respects a continuity in the politics of transportation developed under the eighteenth century monarchy, the period was marred by a significant decrease in construction and by a noticeable deterioration in existing infrastructures. Yet the revolutionary authorities labored to promote a plan of a homogeneous space of circulation: a space organized by a network of communications, standardized by uniform distance, and maintained by revenue from tolls whose overall aim was to contribute to the unity of the French territory.
