Face à Jean Chouan, devenu, de nos jours, une véritable référence identitaire en Mayenne, les autres chefs chouans du département font pâle figure. S’ils paient un lourd tribut à la guerre civile, la plupart survivent et retournent dans l’oubli de leur campagne après 1800. Projetés en quelques semaines dans une pacification qu’ils n’ont pas forcément voulu, ils adoptent des comportements différents, parfois ambivalents. C’est ainsi qu’à côté d’un certain légalisme, des anciens chefs maintiennent une réserve chouanne, prête à se soulever à la moindre occasion. C’est d’ailleurs ce que les royalistes leur demanderont en 1815 et 1832, avec l’insuccès que l’on connaît. Outre ces épisodes insurrectionnels, ces chouans s’avèrent néanmoins gênants pour les gouvernements monarchistes car avides de reconnaissance symbolique et financière (qu’ils n’obtiendront jamais). Force est d’ailleurs de constater qu’ils représenteront toujours une menace pour la paix civile.

Victories and defeats of the chouan leaders from Mayenne in the 19th century . Compared to Jean Chouan who has become a real reference in Mayenne nowadays, the other Chouan leaders are less famous. Though they pay a heavy tribute to the civil war, most of them survive and are forgotten once they have come back in their villages after 1800. They quickly have to face pacification measures that they don’t really want and have different, sometimes ambivalent behaviours. They are legalist, but at the same time, some former Chouan leaders keep a group of armed men, ready to rise up at the first opportunity. That’s what they will be asked by the royalists in 1815 and 1832 but as it is well-known, it won’t be successful. Besides, these Chouans become embarrassing for the monarchist governments because they are eager to receive a symbolical and financial recognition (that they will never receive). Actually they will always represent a threat for the civil peace.
